Pewsey Vale Bowls Club is celebrating its Centenary Year with a packed programme of special matches and social events. The club was first formed in 1923 with just three rinks, situated behind the Greyhound Public House in the centre of the village. This is why a greyhound is the club emblem. In 1953 the club moved to the present site with a private clubhouse, where there are six rinks which are considered to be amongst the finest in Wiltshire. The club now has a membership of over 100 ranging from 12 to over 90 years of age.
During the centenary season, which runs from mid-April until the end of September, the club is hosting a number of one-off celebratory matches against Bowls Wiltshire, Friends of English Bowling, Barbarians Bowling Association, Salisbury & District League and Swindon & District League; furthermore, the club has secured a highly prestigious fixture against a team from Bowls England on Thursday 18 May 2023.
In addition to the celebration matches, there is a very busy fixtures list of club, county and national matches. The men’s team is flying high, having been promoted to the top division in the Wilts 4 rink at the end of last season. The ladies team plays in the local league and has high hopes of surpassing last year’s very promising results. For those members who want to play in a less competitive environment the club organises ‘roll-ups’ on Tuesday evenings and Friday afternoons. These highly popular events enable our members to play in the traditional Pewsey friendly manner and enjoy a social drink afterwards should they wish. There is also an exciting programme of social activities, which run throughout the year alongside the bowling.
The green opens for play at 10.30 on Saturday 15 April. Experienced bowlers or those who would like to play the sport for the first time are very welcome to come along on that day, meet members of the club and try out the green. In addition, the club is holding an Open Day on Saturday 27 May 2023 from 10.30-16.30, which is another opportunity for potential members to come and experience what Pewsey Vale Bowls Club has to offer.
